About Bear Wallow Herbs
Hello,
my name is Cara Saunders,
the
creator of Bear Wallow Herbs.
I
became an herbalist to combine all of my
unique talents for the purpose of helping people heal and inspiring
people to develop a connection to nature. My journey to become an herbalist
started in 1999 after I completed a B. S. in Forestry and Environmental
Studies. I wondered if there wasn't more to forests than just the (commercially
valuable) trees. So I started observing plants and learning from experienced
herbalists including Lise Wolff and Matthew Wood in Minnesota. In 2003,
I was a full-time student at the Blue Otter School of Herbal Medicine.
I continue to learn as I interact with the plants on a daily basis.
In December 2007, Bear Wallow Herbs was awarded a technology grant from
the eBay Foundation and Cara Saunders was named a Microenterprise
Entrepreneur of the Year in Siskiyou County. The grant money has
allowed me to run my business from this remote off-the-grid location.
The success of my business has earned me the respect of my community.
I welcome visitors who are interested in learning
about plants and their medicinal uses. I enjoy teaching others and sharing
my knowledge. Thanks to all the great volunteers who helped out this
summer with harvesting, digging, chopping, and creating herbal tinctures
and salves.
Bear Wallow Herbs was featured on the CBS program Eye on the Bay when
Cara Saunders taught a workshop at Alemany Farm in San Francisco as
part of the Green Festival 2008. To

Bear Wallow Herbs is a "one woman business," but it is also
a "family business." I am so grateful
for all the love and support of my sister and my parents (pictured at
the San Francisco Green Festival, November 2008).
I am so excited to have the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and
enthusiasm about herbs to the next generation. My son already has a
lively interest in nature!
