Symptoms of allergies can include itchy or watery eyes, runny or stuffy nose, wheezing, dry or itchy throat, hives or other skin rash, upset stomach, or other individual reactions. Digestion, lungs and skin can all be affected depending on the cause of the allergy. When your body needs to process toxins or food that it is unable to digest—that is the job of the liver. Bitter herbs are liver cleansers. Great liver cleansing herbs are Dandelion Root Tincture or Dandelion Root Glycerite (Taraxacum officinale) and Yellow Dock Root Tincture. Another very effective bitter herb for allergies is Goldenrod. Goldenrod Tincture (Solidago canadensis) is a specific remedy for hay fever and cat allergies, and it is also a great immune system builder. Goldenrod Tincture strengthens your immune system so that your body does not overreact to something in your environment that is not really a big threat. You could describe itchy, watery eyes and a runny nose as an “overreaction” to pollen in the air. Yerba Santa Tincture (Eriodycton californicum) also provides respiratory relief for sinus congestion and runny nose. Yerba Santa strengthens the lungs and the entire respiratory system. Yerba Santa is an expectorant and is very soothing to a cough. Nettle Tincture or Nettle Tea (Urtica dioica) is great for building up a strong body to avoid allergies. Nettles is rich in vitamins and minerals and the tea tastes great!
Sometimes an allergic reaction can start as a result of stress. Nettle is also a good stress reliever and can be used daily as a tonic. If your allergy symptoms are worse from stress related, include more herbs listed under Anxiety.
Dandelion Root Tincture, Yellow Dock Root, Goldenrod, Yerba Santa, and Nettle Tincture can be used together to combat allergies.
Anemia happens when your blood is depleted and does not have enough iron. When you are low on iron, your body can be slow to heal. The treatment of iron deficiency requires the intake of iron and Vitamin C because in order for our bodies to break down and assimilate iron, very strong stomach acid is needed. Foods rich in Vitamin C and iron are carrots, beets, almonds, walnuts, leafy greens, and red kidney beans. Elderberry Tincture or Glycerite (Sambucus canadensis) contains Vitamin C and iron. Yellow Dock Roots (Rumex crispus), Dandelion Root Tincture, Chickweed (Stellaria media), Oregon Grape Roots (Mahonia nervosa) are herbs that contain iron, aid in the absorption of iron, and stimulate your liver to release stored iron. You can put a dose of Yellow Dock Root Tincture, Dandelion Root Tincture, Chickweed Tincture, and Oregon Grape Root Tincture into a cup of juice (orange, pineapple, or grapefruit) and you will have natural iron and Vitamin C.
California Poppy Tincture (Eschscholzia californica) is a great herb to carry with you in case of an emergency. California Poppy does not contain opium like its well-known plant cousin, but it is a sedative and a pain killer. California Poppy is very calming and is used to quiet nervousness and anxiety. It can be used to calm the tension of a first aid situation or to help chill out a stressful lifestyle. Although California Poppy Tincture is effective for relieving anxiety, some people find it too sedating to take during the day, unless there is time for a nap. Blue Vervain Tincture (Verbena hastata) is used to relieve anxiety and it is not sedating. Blue Vervain calms the nerves and quiets the mind. It is great for people who are worrying and thinking too much. Some people use Blue Vervain Tincture during the day and California Poppy Tincture in the evening or before sleeping. St. John’s Wort Tincture (Hypericum perforatum) is helpful when a person is feeling frustration, nervous agitation, overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed. When you hold a leaf of St. John’s Wort up to the sky you will see many tiny pin-prick holes through each leaf. These holes symbolize the action of St. John’s Wort Tincture as the light breaking through the dark emotions and restoring in you the ability to trust your instincts. Lemon Balm Tincture or Lemon Balm Glycerite (Melissa officinalis) is used for calming a nervous stomach, anxious heart, and trouble sleeping. Stress Less Tincture is a formula that I designed with the intention to help repair a nervous system that has been weakened by stress, lighten emotions, improve mood, increase energy, relieve fatigue, and provide the support needed to help you trust your instincts.
Chickweed Tincture taken internally is a good remedy for arthritis. Chickweed is a common weed and could be grown in your garden or a planter. The leaves are good eaten fresh or added to salads. Chickweed is cooling, lubricating, and anti-inflammatory. Chickweed helps the kidneys regulate water. Taking a tincture of Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) improves arthritis (More details in section on Bones). A topical remedy for arthritis is Arnica Salve (Arnica latifolia). Many people feel relief when they rub Arnica Salve into joints that hurt due to arthritis. You can reapply the salve as often as needed, but do not use on cut or open skin because Arnica internally can be toxic. Turmeric Root is an excellent herbal remedy for arthritis. Cooking with turmeric is beneficial, but when you need a more concentrated dose many times a day, Turmeric Root Tincture (Curcuma longa) is more convenient. Turmeric detoxifies and cleanses the blood and reduces inflammation in the joints.
Bee Stings & Insect Bites
Some insect bites and bee stings can be very painful. Here are some great herbal remedies that can quickly ease the pain, itching, and swelling. Plantain Salve (Plantago lanceolata) can be used as a great drawing agent to pull the poison out of your skin. You could also use fresh Plantain leaves, but you actually need to chew up the leaves in your mouth. The enzymes in your saliva start to break down the leaves and make its healing medicine available. Simply pick some fresh Plantain leaves, chew a few times and then press the wet leaves onto the bite or sting. Once you know this herbal trick, its fun to teach it to your friends. If you don’t have Plantain growing in a convenient location year round, it is good to have Plantain Salve on hand for the unexpected mosquito bites, spider bites, or bee stings. Plantain Salve can be applied regularly until the itching stops, the swelling goes down, and the skin has healed. If the pain persists or the person who got stung or bit needs to calm down, California Poppy Tincture is a great natural pain reliever and relaxant (not to be used right before driving). Staying calm is important because overreacting can cause your blood to pump faster and spread the poison. Of course, if someone is allergic to bee stings, these herbal remedies are no replacement for epinephrine (epi-pen) when it is needed. Another way to speed the healing of a bite or sting is by taking some Elderberry Tincture or Elderberry Glycerite to boost your immune system and help your body fight the poison.
A great herb to have on hand to stop bleeding is Yarrow. Yarrow leaves can be applied to a cut, a bleeding wound, or a nosebleed to clot the blood and speed wound healing. If you grow Yarrow in your garden, you will always have this important remedy easily at home. Yarrow does grow in a wide variety of environments, but we can’t always have fresh Yarrow at hand, therefore I recommend having Yarrow Salve (Achellia millefolium) in your Herbal Medicine First Aid Kit. You can reapply Yarrow Salve as often as needed and be sure to keep wounds clean to prevent infection. If you can’t find Yarrow Salve, try another herb you may have in your kitchen—Cayenne Powder (Capsicum annuum). Be brave and sprinkle Cayenne powder onto your cut. Surprisingly, it does not sting. Cayenne stops the bleeding quickly.
To build strong bones and fight osteoporosis, make Horsetail Tincture a part of your daily routine. Horsetail is naturally high in minerals including silica. Horsetail also strengthens and rebuilds cartilage. Nettle Tincture or Nettle Tea is another excellent herbal bone strengthener.
Burns and Sunburn
Be prepared for what to do if you burn your skin in the kitchen or out in the sun. St. John’s Wort Salve is a great natural burn remedy. St. John’s Wort taken internally is well-known for its use as an anti-depressant, but when applied topically St. John’s Wort draws heat out of the skin and heals burned skin. St. John’s Wort is also healing for nerve damage, which could be caused by burning yourself repeatedly in the same place. That makes St. John’s Wort salve a great remedy for chefs and mechanics or anyone who cooks or works with tools. St. John’s Wort is also used to heal sunburn. Another great natural burn remedy is Aloe (Aloe vera). If you have an aloe plant growing in your house, break off a fresh leaf. Slice the leaf down the side and open it to reveal the slimy gel. Scoop out that cooling gel and apply it to the burn.
It is very important to heal bruises soon after they occur. A bruise is stagnant blood and stagnant blood could be a potential cancer site. No need to worry—Yarrow Salve applied to bruises, even old bruises, will quickly help to break up stagnant blood of a bruise and to heal the damaged tissues. Arnica Salve can be massaged into bruises, as long as the skin is not cut or broken open. Arnica is great when you are banged up and have sore muscles. (See details in section on Muscle Injury) If the topical treatment isn’t enough, Calendula Tincture (Calendula officinalis) taken internally is used to heal old wounds, move stagnant blood, and remove bruises.
If your skin has been rubbed raw or if a blister has formed, reach for Yarrow Salve. Apply Yarrow Salve and then cover the area with a bandage to prevent further rubbing. If the blister pops open, continue applying Yarrow Salve until the skin is completely healed.
For preventing cancer, regular cleansing of our body systems prevents a build up of carcinogens. (See section on herbs to Detoxify.) For treating cancer, each person and situation is unique and deserving of a consultation with an herbalist and strong social support. An herbalist can help you get to the root of the spiritual, emotional, and physical causes of cancer and create an action plan for changes that need to be made. Some herbs are too stimulating and should not be used with cancer. Some remedies an herbalist might suggest are Red Clover Tincture (Trifolium pretense), Shiitake Mushroom Tincture (Lentinula edodes), and Turmeric Root Tincture, but they are not necessarily appropriate for all individuals and circumstances. Red Clover Tincture is used when the goal is to wall off the cancerous tissue, creating a cyst around the cancer that separates it from the rest of the body. The cancer is not cured, but it is not able to spread. Shiitake Mushroom Tincture concentrates and preserves the medicinal qualities you get from eating Shiitake Mushrooms. There is scientific research that shows Shiitake mushrooms boost your immune system, accelerate degeneration of tumor cells, and inhibit abnormal cell growth. Turmeric Root Tincture has been shown to reduce tumors and inflammation.
Candida, Yeast Infection, Thrush, Fungus on Skin
Candida is yeast that normally lives peacefully in our bodies, but colonies can grow out of control when we are under stress or if the immune system has been suppressed from long term use of antibiotics. Colonies of Candida can live in the vagina, intestines, nipples, arm folds or on the skin. A candida overgrowth that causes flaky, red skin and white patches in the throat, mouth or on the tongue is called thrush. Candida overgrowth can be indicated by a white smelly vaginal discharge and itching in the vagina or anus. Shepherd’s Purse Tincture (Capsella versa) is a remedy for thrush. Calendula Tincture is a great anti-fungal remedy for yeast in the intestines. Oregon Grape Root Tincture also helps bring your intestines back into balance. Chaparral Tincture (Larrea divaricata), Fireweed Tincture (Epilobium angustifolium), and Horsetail Tincture are all balancing herbs that can help push Candida back to normal levels. Chaparral Tincture is anti-fungal and helpful when the immune system and liver are overwhelmed with toxins. Fireweed is anti-inflammatory and reduces heat. Horsetail Tincture is a good astringent, changing your body’s environment so the yeast cannot flourish. The body’s environment that allows yeast to overgrow is the same environment that grows fungus. Athlete’s foot, toe nail fungus, and “jungle rot” are related problems. For these topical conditions, the tinctures can be put right on the skin and also taken internally.
Colds, Flu, Virus, Bacteria
We are the most susceptible to colds and flu when we are under stress, overworked, run-down, and our immune system is not functioning at its best. For a quick recovery, it is very important to get lots of sleep, since your body can heal while it is resting. (See section on herbs for Sleep) Elderberry Tincture or Elderberry Glycerite is a great herb to think of as soon as you feel the first signs of a cold or flu coming on. Many times, if you take Elderberry right away, you can fight off a virus before it causes a cold or the flu. Elderberry boosts your immune system and can be used regularly as a preventative. It is naturally anti-viral, high in bioflavonoids, Vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, and potassium. Another way to build a strong immune system is with Shiitake Mushroom Tincture. Of course, it’s great to eat your medicine by cooking with Shiitake mushrooms, but if you want to give extra strength to your immune system, you can take Shiitake Mushroom Tincture three times each day or add the tincture to your food or tea.
A fever is your body’s natural way of raising the temperature to make an inhospitable environment for viruses and bacteria. But when the fever is no longer serving that purpose, you want to break the fever and start sweating. A good way to do that is by taking a hot shower or bath, then bundling up in warm clothes and blankets and drinking a hot cup of tea with a dose of Elderberry Tincture and Yarrow Tincture (Achillea millefolium). You can simply put the tincture drops into hot water. This will cause you to start sweating and the fever will go down. For sinus or chest congestion, sore throat, and cough, you will be happy to know about the holy herb Yerba Santa.
Yerba Santa Tincture is a strong lung tonic that will help you breathe easier. It is an expectorant, but is effective for a dry cough also. Yerba Santa is anti-bacterial and is a wonderful remedy for sinus infections. If the sore throat is severe, it is possibly Strep throat, caused by the bacteria Streptococcus. In that case, you should reach for a strong antibiotic herb such as Oregon Grape Root Tincture. With acute symptoms, you can take another dose of Oregon Grape Root Tincture every 20 minutes.
A sore throat is not the only symptom that can indicate a bacterial infection. Other symptoms may include fever, earache, yellow or green mucus, painful urination, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting. If you suspect that your symptoms are being caused by a bacterial infection, Oregon Grape Root Tincture may be just the remedy you need. Calendula Tincture builds up the immune system and is indicated as a remedy when there are swollen glands. Calendula can also be helpful for bacterial infections that stay in the body due to poor lymphatic drainage. Red Clover Tincture is also good at moving the lymph and relieving swollen glands.
Today, pollution and chemicals are so abundant that even people who eat mostly organic food could benefit from herbs that remove toxins from the body. You could get in the routine of using herbs to cleanse the body twice a year, in the spring and in the fall, or whenever is convenient for you. I would recommend taking the detox herbs for a month, or 28 days in a row.
Dandelion Root is the first herb I think of for cleansing. It is a bitter tasting remedy that cleanses the liver and gallbladder, allowing these organs to work more efficiently. Dandelion Root Tincture or Dandelion Glycerite improves digestion and is a mild laxative. Chickweed Tincture is an important remedy for cleansing the body. Chickweed decongests the lymph system and clears out any stagnant water held in the body by flushing it through the kidneys. Another wonderful herb for detoxifying the body is Chaparral. Chaparral Tincture, made from the leaves and flowers of this desert herb, has an intensely bitter taste, but one that is worth trying when you need to remove toxins from your body.
Anyone who has been exposed to chemicals, taken medical drugs, used recreational drugs, smoked tobacco, or regularly consumed alcohol or caffeine could have a compromised lymph system, immune system, and liver. Toxins can accumulate in any of our pathways of elimination—lungs, skin, kidneys, colon, or menstruation—and symptoms of toxicity can appear in any of these pathways as well. We are lucky to have Chaparral Tincture to help our bodies remove accumulated toxins and return our body systems back to peak performance. Red Clover Tincture is another great herb for detox because it removes impurities from the blood.
St. John’s Wort Tincture affects the nerves and the liver and it also cleanses toxins from the blood. If the body is so loaded down with toxins, this can cause depression and anxiety. Lightening the load of toxins in the body can also bring clarity to the mind and peace to the emotions.
A diet high in processed foods and a lifestyle that lacks exercise can lead to poor sugar management by the body as well as insulin resistance. Insulin Resistance can lead to adult-onset diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and can be a factor in the initiation or growth of cancers. Exercise, especially muscle building, is a key to preventing insulin resistance. Getting enough rest and adequate sleep at night are also very important. In addition to diet, exercise and sleep, there are herbs that can help. Shiitake Mushroom Tincture has been shown to lower blood sugar levels. Chaparral Tincture can help stabilize blood sugar levels by stimulating the digestion and metabolism of fats and oils. When the body is able to digest fats, it is not as heavily reliant on sugars and carbohydrates. Yellow Dock Root Tincture reduces stress on the pancreas by sedating the appetite, digestion, and metabolism.
Good digestion is a key to good health. Without proper digestion, essential nutrients are not assimilated. Oregon Grape Root Tincture is our herbal ally when it comes to maintaining a healthy digestive system and helping us get the most nutrition out of the foods we eat. Many people are surprised to learn that Oregon Grape Root is a remedy for constipation and diarrhea, seemingly opposite problems. This is because Oregon Grape Root works by balancing the intestines, stomach, and liver. It is also effective for relieving indigestion or acid-reflux. Oregon Grape Root is anti-bacterial and anti-amoebic, so is therefore used for travelers’ dysentery and food poisoning, which may include acute symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Unlike conventional antibiotics, Oregon Grape Root does not destroy the beneficial bacteria that live in our gut and aid digestion. I have heard from many people that they like to take Oregon Grape Root Tincture daily as a preventative while traveling. Even at home, Oregon Grape Root can be used to improve nutrition and digestion of proteins and fats. Another great herb for digestion is Yellow Dock Root. Use Yellow Dock Root Tincture to speed up digestion when food sits in the stomach or colon for too long. Diarrhea or constipation may be symptoms and reasons to use Yellow Dock Root Tincture. Milder than Yellow Dock is Dandelion Root Tincture.
California Spikenard is a gigantic herb that grows with its roots right in the creek water and creates stars of blue-black berries. The California Spikenard Berries are a great remedy to relieve stress and fatigue. The California Spikenard Berry Tincture (Aralia californica) is used to ease the physical symptoms of stress and to lighten emotions. It works quickly to provide a mood shift when emotions are running high. It gives energy when stress has left you feeling run down. California Spikenard Berry Tincture is a great herb to have around if you are having mood swings, feeling over emotional, or stressed out. Blue Vervain Tincture may also be a good herb for you if you are feeling low on energy. Blue Vervain balances your body’s hormones and fluids. (More details on Blue Vervain in the sections on Anxiety and Sleep.) Dehydration could be a cause of fatigue. Be sure to drink water early in the day so you don’t wind up dehydrated and tired in the afternoon.
Add some fresh squeezed lemon or lime juice to your water to help keep you hydrated. If you are tired from being active in the summer heat, an herbal ice tea may be just the thing you need to cool you down and give you more energy. Use herbs like Lemon Balm and Nettles. To make an electrolyte drink, add some sea salt to your herbal ice tea. Resist the temptation for stimulants with caffeine since caffeine upsets the normal electrolyte balance. If feeling low on energy is a regular problem, you may need to boost your immune system. Use herbs such as Elderberry, Yerba Santa, Echinacea, and Shiitake Mushroom that are described in the section on Colds, Flu, Virus, Bacteria.
Many women have successfully gotten rid of fibroids and balanced their reproductive systems with herbs. Shepherd's Purse Tincture and Yarrow Tincture work well together to stop excessive bleeding. Easter Lily Tincture cleanses the female reproductive system. Chickweed Tincture and Elderberry Tincture are also indicated for uterine fibroids. I also recommend Dandelion Root Tincture, which is great for liver support and processing out extra hormones. Chaparral Tincture is another strong liver cleansing and detoxifying herb that has helped with fibroids. Turmeric Root Tincture is useful for fibroids (best for people who run cold because this herb is warming). See section above on Anemia for herbs to boost iron levels if excessive bleeding has caused anemia.
A healthy heart requires a healthy cardiovascular system, with good circulation and without too much pressure on the heart. Blood pressure is affected by the elasticity of veins and arteries. The less elastic blood vessels are, the more resistance they will give to the blood flow, which leads to higher blood pressure. Yarrow Tincture increases the elasticity of blood vessels and to lowers blood pressure. Yarrow thins the blood and improves circulation. Salt increases blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. Shiitake Mushrooms have been shown to remove excess salt from the body and lower blood pressure. Fluid retention also raises blood pressure; therefore herbs that affect the kidneys can also be beneficial to heart health.
Dandelion Root Tincture and Chickweed Tincture are safe and effective diuretics that can be used to flush out extra fluids and lower blood pressure. Red Clover Tincture is used to thin the blood because Red Clover contains natural coumarins. High blood pressure can also be caused by stress, anxiety, and mental tension. California Poppy, Blue Vervain, or California Spikenard can help you relax and reenergize from stress, therefore putting less strain on your heart. The body uses cholesterol to line the arteries as a reaction to inflammation. Cholesterol soothes irritated tissue in the arteries, but too much cholesterol can block the arteries and stress the heart. Studies show that Shiitake Mushroom Tincture lowers cholesterol.
Hawthorn Berries contain bioflavonoids and fruit acids that are cooling to heat and irritation. This is how Hawthorn Berry Tincture (Crataegus sp.) prevents your body from needing to line the arteries with cholesterol, and leads to lower cholesterol. Hawthorn Berry Tincture is a tonic herb that strengthens the heart and can be used as a preventative by people with a family history of heart disease. Hawthorn Berry Tincture works slowly over months and years as you take a dose a few times each day.
Oregon Grape Root Tincture is a great herbal antibiotic that can be used to prevent and treat infections. When treating an open wound, you can take Oregon Grape Root Tincture internally and apply Plantain Salve topically, directly on the spot. Both herbs are antibiotic and Plantain is also a great drawing agent that can be helpful to draw out pus and heal the wound. Staph infections can be treated with Oregon Grape Root Tincture, taken internally and/or applied topically. Use a cotton ball to wipe the affected area with the tincture. We know that Oregon Grape Root Tincture is good for intestinal infections, but remember Oregon Grape Root Tincture when you have symptoms of a bacterial infection—headache, fever, aches, or sore throat (see section on herbs for Colds/Flu).
Blue Vervain Tincture is an excellent remedy for hot flashes and night sweats. Blue Vervain works by regulating hormones, cleansing the liver, and balancing body temperature. Red Clover Tincture is also useful during menopause because of its cooling, moistening, and cleansing effects. Red Clover has natural plant estrogens (phyto-estrogens), which are chemically similar to the estrogen our bodies make, but they do not cause excessive growth. The estrogen from Red Clover can bind to the estrogen receptor sites in our bodies and prevent the body’s estrogen from causing problems. Cleansing herbs, such as Dandelion Root Tincture, and other mentioned in the Detoxify section, are beneficial during menopause.
To help set your menstrual cycle to a “normal” 28 day cycle, you can use Yarrow Tincture. High estrogen levels during the second half of the cycle can cause over-building of the uterine lining, uterine fibroids, and excessive bleeding with lots of cramping. Yarrow Tincture eases a heavy menstrual blood flow and shortens a long menstrual cycle. Dark and clotted menstrual blood can be a sign that the uterine muscles are weak and are having trouble expelling the uterine lining. Weak uterine muscles can lead to fibroids. Shepherd’s Purse Tincture is a remedy for fibroids—it strengthens the uterus and quickly stops excessive bleeding.
Extra estrogen means the liver has to work harder. Yarrow Tincture, Calendula Tincture, Dandelion Root Tincture, and Blue Vervain Tincture help the liver break down extra hormones. These four herbs are also good for bringing on a late period and easing PMS symptoms such as mood swings and food cravings. Heavy bleeding and a long menstrual cycle can cause anemia—use Yellow Dock Root Tincture and other herbs mentioned in section on Anemia. Sometimes the opposite situation, low estrogen, is the problem. Low estrogen can cause a cycle where the bleeding starts slowly with spotting and extends a long time. Low estrogen can decrease vaginal lubrication.
Easter Lily Tincture (Lilium longiflorum) is an herbal remedy that nourishes the ovaries and builds fluids. Easter Lily is also a remedy for cysts in the breasts or ovaries. Feverfew Tincture (Tanacetum parthenium) is a remedy for menstrual cramps, blood congestion, and headaches. Some of the above remedies need to be used for three cycles before symptoms are completely resolved. In the meantime, California Poppy Tincture works quickly as a pain killer and antispasmodic to relieve cramps.
Arnica is an herb you won’t forget once you have used it to heal sore muscles or relieve joint pain. Arnica Salve should be massaged into muscle injuries, sore muscles, sprains, strains, torn ligaments, and pulled muscles. Arnica is anti-inflammatory and can be used to reduce pain, redness, and swelling of the skin. Joint pain and arthritis pain are relieved by Arnica. Arnica is also a remedy for bruises when the skin is not cut or bleeding. You don’t want to use arnica on skin that is cut open because in large doses it could be toxic. Arnica salve applied to unbroken skin or homeopathic arnica taken internally are safe ways to take the herb.
St. John’s Wort applied topically as a salve is amazing in its ability to heal nerves. St. John’s Wort Salve can be applied topically to nerve injuries, nerve damage, or nerve pain. The salve can be massaged into the skin at the location of the pain or along the spine where the nerves connect. You can even put St. John’s Wort Salve in your mouth—apply to gums to sooth nerve pain of a toothache.
Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland due to infection, and causes pain during urination. Take Oregon Grape Root Tincture for the antibacterial properties. Yarrow Tincture reduces irritation of the prostate. Benign Prostate Hypertrophy (BPH) is swelling of the prostate gland, which can interfere with the flow of urine. The main symptom is frequent, slow, or painful urination, especially at night. Yarrow Tincture would again be beneficial to soothe the prostate, especially since Yarrow improves circulation. The herbs described in the section on herbs to Detoxify will be useful here because accumulated toxins from plastics or growth hormones can cause BPH.
Red Clover Tincture helps detoxify and it also helps reduce swelling of glands. Fireweed Tincture reduces inflammation and irritation of the prostate. Speaking of inflammation, Turmeric Root is one of the best herbal anti-inflammatories we have.
Plantain is so useful for first aid that it is also known as “Soldiers’ Weed.” Plantain Salve is antibacterial, making it a good remedy for any scratch or scrape to prevent infection and heal the skin. If a wound has gotten infected, Plantain Salve can be used to draw out pus and counter the bacteria. Plantain Salve is such a good drawing agent that it can be used to draw out slivers, splinters, thorns, dirt, glass, or anything stuck in the skin. Simply apply Plantain Salve and wait with a tweezers to grab the material coming out. Plantain Salve is soothing to any type of skin rash. It calms the itch and irritation, reduces redness, and combats any bacteria that may try to live in the open skin.
Apply Plantain Salve to skin bothered by eczema, poison oak, poison ivy, acne, or hives. While Plantain Salve is working topically, it is also beneficial to use herbs internally to reduce heat and irritation. A great herb to stimulate your internal defenses is Dandelion Root Tincture, which cleanses your liver and gallbladder. Chickweed Tincture taken internally is cooling to inflamed skin. Chickweed improves the functioning of many other body systems that have an effect on the skin, such as lymph and digestion.
A good night’s sleep is crucial to your health. If you have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep through the night, try a dose of California Poppy Tincture to help your body relax and sleep. Remember that California Poppy is also a pain killer, which is great if pain is what is keeping you awake. Many have used California Poppy while traveling overseas and needing to adjust to a new time zone. It may be night at your new destination but your body is still functioning like it is daytime back home.
Take California Poppy to help you sleep and avoid dealing with jetlag. When traveling or at home, sometimes we can’t sleep because the mind is so busy thinking. Thinking over everything ten times or worrying over little details is not helpful, especially if it is happening at night while you should be sleeping. Blue Vervain Tincture quiets the mind, and therefore allows you to rest and sleep. Blue Vervain is also helpful to women during menopause when insomnia becomes a common symptom.
Blue Vervain balances the body’s fluids and is an important remedy for menopausal hot flashes. Another great remedy for insomnia is Wild Lettuce Tincture (Lactuca scariola), which is a deeply sedative remedy that relaxes tight muscles. Wild Lettuce is the remedy of choice when there is a pattern of negative thinking. If you notice that each train of thought is ending with negative outcomes, don’t stay awake any later, reach for Wild Lettuce Tincture and enjoy a good night’s sleep. You get a wonderful blend of Blue Vervain, California Popppy, and Wild Lettuce in the Sleep Well Tincture. Lemon Balm Tincture or Lemon Balm Glycerite calms the nervous system and helps you sleep when anxiety or nervousness is keeping you awake.
A toothache is not something to be ignored since it can be a sign of a serious problem in your mouth. If you are on your way to the dentist and can’t stand the pain of the toothache, take some California Poppy Tincture. If the toothache involves nerve pain, apply St. John’s Wort Salve to the gums in the affected area. Plantain Salve has been used effectively to draw a tooth up out of the gums, which can be necessary sometimes with wisdom teeth or children’s teeth. This specific use of plantain was discovered while using plantain in the mouth for an infection—not only did plantain draw out the infection, but it also pulled the tooth up to where it needed to be. If there is an infection in your mouth, apply Plantain Salve and take Oregon Grape Root Tincture, on your way to the dentist. You can drip the tincture right onto the affected tooth or put the tincture drops into a water pick.
If you are not always at the ideal place healthy home cooking, getting exercise every day, and living a stress free lifestyle, then you might have some extra weight you would prefer to live without. Chickweed Tincture is a wonderful nourishing herb that is good for weight loss. Chickweed improves metabolism by balancing the liver and the endocrine system. Chickweed Tincture is a healthy way to get rid of excess fat and water in the body. If your body is not good at breaking down the fats you eat, Chaparral Tincture can help by cooling and stimulating the liver. Stress and a poor diet can be a real strain to your liver. Chaparral Tincture can help bring you back into balance.

"Goldenrod Tincture has been a lifesaver for me! I have allergies all year long that include itchy watery eyes, coughing, and stuffy nose that eventually lead to sinus infections. Springtime is my favorite time of the year because of the great weather to be able to enjoy the great outdoors! Unfortunately, as soon as spring hits every year I am stuck inside trying to recover from my allergy symptoms. They are so bad that I have no desire to go outside of the house. I feel so lucky to have found Bear Wallow Herbs! As soon as I started taking Goldenrod Tincture I immediately noticed the difference. My eyes are not watering or itchy, I have not had a stuffy or runny nose for weeks now and I can sleep at night because I am not coughing. Right now, during the middle of spring is when my allergies are typically the worst, but they have been so under control and the only thing I have done differently is to take Goldenrod Tincture. Thank you so much!"
Vanessa Valiente-Raeder, Sacramento, CA
"I used to harvest my own Queen Anne's Lace, but I now live in a city where I cannot find a reliable harvest. In my research, Bear Wallow Herbs was recommended, and I am so happy I found this product for sale here. The Queen Anne's Lace tincture has been very convenient to take, compared with my old method of harvesting seeds and then chewing the hairy/sharp seeds with some honey and washing it all down with water. I am so impressed with the reliability of this tincture. "I twisted and sprained my ankle while walking outside on some river rocks. My ankle was bruised and swollen and I needed to use crutches. After massaging it daily with Arnica Salve, the swelling went down and the pain stopped. Soon I was able to walk on it again. It was an amazing recovery. Thank you Bear Wallow Herbs."

"I love your Herbal Medicine First Aid Kit! It's very conveniently and thoughtfully packaged, so that I can keep everything together and handy, with the very readable, color coded info cards right there for reference when I need them. Most importantly, what I've used from the Kit really works. The Plantain Salve worked for some very pesky insect bites for which I had tried at least a half-dozen remedies, none of which had worked. I've been plagued by these bites, which itch, swell, and don't heal for ages. I noticed a difference right away with the Plantain Salve, the itching calmed down and stayed manageable, and the bites are finally healing. But my greatest amazement is the result I got from the Elderberry Tincture. I was definitely coming down with a very bad head cold. All the familiar dreaded nose and throat symptoms, and the feeling of just wanting to stay in bed were there. I remembered my Herbal Medicine First Aid Kit. I ran eagerly to get it and see what was recommended. I used the Elderberry Tincture. After a first night of real misery, I started feeling much better, and within 24 hours I had no cold symptoms! Gone, the virus driven away by the Elderberry Tincture before it could get established! Much to my relief! Best of all, your product inspires confidence. I feel I can trust your research, knowledge and the love and care you put into making the remedies. Thanks, and keep up the good healing." - Claudia Vidano, San Francisco, CA
